What is the process of in-store water testing?

Here's how to collect a sample:

Run your pool pump on high for at least an hour before collecting water. That way we're testing water that represents your entire pool.

Collect water from about 12-18 inches below the surface or about elbow-deep. Avoid skimming from the top or going too deep near the bottom.

What parameters are tested (pH, chlorine, etc.)

  • pH levels (ideal range: 7.4-7.6)
  • Free available chlorine (2.0-4.0 ppm)• Total alkalinity (80-120 ppm)
  • Calcium hardness (200-400 ppm)
  • Cyanuric acid/stabilizer (30-50 ppm)

Not sure if you’re adding too much or not enough—chlorine?

Learn exactly how to calculate the right amount. We show how your pool size and current water balance play a vital role. So, you keep your water safe and properly sanitized.

Why Choose Shasta Pool Supply for Water Testing?

At Shasta Pool Supply, water testing is a service built on decades of Arizona pool expertise and real-world results.

Our Testing Is Always Free

Most pool stores charge $15–$25 for a water test. These tests often followed by a generic printout and vague recommendations.

Our Water Testing Offers

  • No hidden fees
  • No purchase requirements
  • No strings attached

You walk in with a sample and walk out with professional-grade, computerized analysis.

You Get Real Accuracy and No Guesswork

According to Dan Panfili, precision matters when it comes to water chemistry.
“We use computerized testing so you know exactly where your water stands. That accuracy lets us balance your water correctly the first time.”

Our digital equipment delivers readings with ±1% accuracy, far beyond what color-matching test strips can provide. Just clear, reliable numbers you can trust.

Water balance means keeping your pool water in the right ranges:

  • pH: 7.2-7.8 (how acidic or basic your water is)
  • Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm (your water's ability to resist pH changes)
  • Calcium Hardness: 180-220 ppm (prevents corrosion and scaling)
  • Cyanuric Acid: 30-50 ppm (protects chlorine from sunlight)
  • Chlorine: 1-3 ppm (kills harmful bacteria and algae)

Your Next Step to a Healthier Pool

Most pool water care issues start small. However, water chemistry imbalance can quietly lead to expensive fixes. Many issues like cloudy water or scaling can eventually lead to unsafe swimming conditions.

Professional water testing stops that cycle early. It helps you avoid overcorrecting with chemicals. Proper water balance protects your equipment and keeps your water safe. Most importantly, testing gives you confidence that your pool water is free of issues.

Next, collect a water sample and bring it to any Shasta Pool Supply location. Our Phoenix, Mesa, or Surprise stores will test it at no charge. We will guide you to the right solution and in many cases confirm you have a properly balanced pool.

We are celebrating 60 years helping people with their pools. Let us handle the chemistry, so you can focus on what really matters. Now, start relaxing, swimming, and making memories.
