It is important when working on the filter to inspect the backup ring for any warping. It is best to place it on a flat surface and if it wobbles it is warped, and will need replacement to avoid further problems.

Also, be sure to inspect it for any sharp burrs on the surface. When looking for sharp burrs run your finger along the surface and if there are sharp areas you can sand them with a fine-grit emery cloth. This will prevent any damage that will happen to the O-Rings.

When installing make sure to clean the seated spot for the back up ring of any debris or grime. Anything that is trapped in the seated spot will prevent a proper seal on the filter.
