Winter covers for above ground pools are one of those things where you get what you pay for — up to a point, and then not really. The PCO822 sits in the middle of Swimline's lineup, which is honestly where most 18-foot round pool owners end up anyway. Four feet of overlap is enough to secure it right, the 7x7 scrim keeps debris out without being overkill, and the blue/black construction blocks enough light to keep algae from getting a head start while the pool's closed. We've sold a lot of these.

My last cover only lasted two seasons — what am I actually supposed to do differently?

Usually it's standing water. A solid cover doesn't drain — whatever lands on top stays there, and a few inches of water sitting on it for weeks, especially if it freezes, is what kills covers early. Grab a cover pump when you order this. Cheap insurance.

Is the Swimline PCO822 the Right Winter Cover for My 18' Above Ground Pool?

If you've got an 18-foot round above ground pool and you're looking for a solid, no-fuss winter cover that won't fall apart after one season — this one does the job. The PCO822 is made for pools exactly that size, with a 22-foot cover diameter giving you a 4-foot overlap all the way around. Works well on standard above ground frames. Not the heaviest cover Swimline makes, but for most climates and typical winter conditions, it holds up fine.

  • Best for: 18' round above ground pools needing an affordable, reliable winter cover for one or multiple seasons
  • Also works well for: Mild to moderate winter climates with typical leaf, debris, and light snow loads
  • Not the right fit if: You're in an area with heavy snowfall or ice loads — step up to a higher scrim count cover in that case

What Do Pool Professionals Say About Swimline Winter Covers for Above Ground Pools?

Honestly, for a standard above ground setup, Swimline covers are one of the most common things we recommend — they're widely available, they fit right, and the 4-foot overlap gives you enough to work with when securing the cable and winch. The 7x7 scrim on the PCO822 isn't the beefiest option out there, but we've seen them hold up through full winters just fine. Where we see these fail early is usually from heavy standing water buildup, so if you're in a wet climate, grab a cover pump too.

Shasta Celebrating Sixty Years Servicing Pools

Do I really need a winter cover for my above ground pool or can I just leave it?

Short answer: yes, you need a cover — and it makes your life a lot easier come spring. An uncovered above ground pool through the winter picks up debris, algae, and whatever else the weather throws at it. We've seen pools that skip the cover require hours of cleanup and chemical correction before they're swimmable again. The Swimline PCO822 is one of the more affordable ways to just avoid all that.

  • Blocks leaves, debris, and algae growth through the winter months
  • 4-foot overlap secures tightly over standard 18' round pool frames
  • 8-year warranty — good multi-season value at this price point
